The Mastigograptida, erected by Bates and Urbanek (2002) as a separate order of graptolites
(Graptolithoidea) are a small group of sessile graptolites. The only family Mastigograptidae Bates and
Urbanek, 2002, contains two genera, namely Mastigograptus Ruedemann,1908 (Upper Cambrian -
Silurian) and Micrograptus Eisenack,1974 (Lower Ordovician - Lower Silurian).
Bates and Urbanek (2002, p. 458) gave the following diagnosis of the Mastigograptida:
|
"Cylindrical sicula, budding in triads, dendroid habitus but stipes produced by chain of
corticalized stolothecae with thin-walled free thecae, displaying random arrangements
of oblique sutures, and not revealing a distinct dimorphism."
