CHLOROPHYCEAE - Green algae |
Genus Medusaegraptus Ruedemann, 1925 not a graptolite, but a codiacean or dasycladacean alga |
In 1925, Ruedemann established the genus Medusaegraptus with two species (both from the Silurian of North America): M. mirabilis Ruedemann (type species) and M. graminiformis (Pohlman, 1886) Ruedemann, 1925. Original diagnosis: " Rhabdosome consisting of a simple, nit branching stipe, which is a uniformly thick tube, ending in a blunt point at the base and terminating distally in a dense mass of simple, unbranched flexuosus thin tubes, the thecae" (Ruedemann 1925, p. 29). Boucek (1957) interpreted Medusaegraptus as a graptolite of the order Inocaulida, whereas Bulman (1955, 1970) suggested the algal nature of this fossil. Mierzejewski (1986) considered it be a codiacean alga (Codiaceae), but Lo Duca (1990) assigned it to dasycladacean algae (Dasycladaceae). |
